Whew….it has been a very busy few months since I posted last! I promise to update you on the progress that I have made in helping homeless animals, including one very successful trip to a Bakersfield, CA area animal shelter and a couple days of volunteering at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary located in Kanaab, Utah! But first things first, I am here today to tell you about a new equine rescue located in Northern California, All About Equine Animal Rescue.
As you all are aware, horse slaughter is on the rise. Many ranches throughout the United States are shutting down, falling victim to the current economy, and in turn the horses of these operations are paying for it. In California, selling horses to slaughter for human consumption is illegal, thanks to Proposition 6. HOWEVER it is largely unregulated and anyone who frequently goes to livestock auctions can easily spot a “killbuyer”. In our neighboring state of Nevada, selling horses to slaughter for human consumption is totally legal and practiced openly.
All About Equine Animal Rescue has been alerted of 60 horses, primarily pregnant mares, mares with foals and yearlings, who are being transported to a feedlot in Nevada and shipped on to slaughter in Canada or Mexico. They have until July 17th to raise funds to rescue as many of these horses as possible. I have posted a picture of a bay mare and her 1 month old foal who is at the feedlot. I have pictures of many others if you are intrested. Please go to http://www.allaboutequine.org/ to get more info, or feel free to leave me a message. Donations, resources and ideas are needed to get these horses to safety! Thanks everyone!
